From Muddy To Magnificent

Paint ideas to make it a mudroom in name only

The mudroom is the new powder room. It’s the room that few people knew they needed before they couldn’t live without it. It’s highly functional; it protects the rest of the house from the elements that get tracked in from outdoors and it provides a dedicated space for backpacks, boots, coats, and miscellaneous outdoor tools and sports equipment. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful and clean. Breathing new life into this highly practical space is as easy as choosing a durable, easy-to-clean paint in the colours that fit your personal style.

These mudroom paint ideas will help you think about the style and personality you want the room to embody.

Casual and fun

If this is where things get silly (or let’s face it, a little out of control) before school in the mornings, keep the mood light and cheerful with primary colours such as bright orange or red. If your room isn’t big or if it doesn’t have enough natural light to pull off orange or red walls, use the colours as the fronts or insets of your open wall cabinets. You can even use a different colour for each child to help keep things organized.

Modern and bold

Sleek lines and lots of white with bold, colored accents define the modern look. If your style trends toward minimalist but you have many things in your mudroom, choose a stark white for the walls and cabinetry and let the coats and shoes add the majority of color. This will simplify the look of the room and keep it from appearing too busy. You can also paint the top of a bench with a bright color, such as Leap Frog, and add a colorful rug and you won’t be overdoing it.

Transitional and timeless

Transitional is the look that pairs well with traditional but is more contemporary. It’s also the style that lasts longest. Use lots of whites and cool yellows or grays. Both colours look great with tile or hardwood floors.

Rustic and warm

If you like to blur the lines between inside and out, choose warm rustic colours that you can find in nature. Keep your wood natural and pair it with burgundies, dark greens, or deep oranges. The overall feel will be one of an autumn walk through the woods.

Paint over the scuff marks and fingerprints and start seeing your mudroom for what it really is — an asset that not everyone has. And who knows, your clean, new version may inspire others in the family to hang things up and put shoes where they belong!
